During Covid, when the schools had a staggered attendance schedule, the onsite social worker at Rattlesnake Elementary School was looking for a way for all students to safely create something meaningful together. I had facilitated a similar project in classrooms in San Francisco with 25-30 kids, but this would expand the scope to include over 350 kids! We handed out packets with colorful, patterned papers, glue sticks and stickers and gave the kids the simplest of instructions: create a few 2″ x 2″ hearts using the materials given to them or anything they had at home.

After collecting the hearts, we collaged them onto a wood panel and added a protective coat. “Many Hearts” is 40″ x 80″ and permanently displayed in the school.
